Telugu Wedding Rituals: A Photography Guide to Every Key Moment

A Telugu wedding is full of rituals, and many of them pass in a few seconds. If your photographer does not know what comes next, moments like jeelakarra bellam or the first handful of talambralu can be missed. This guide walks through the main Telugu wedding rituals and what to photograph at each one.

Before the Wedding Day

Pellikuthuru and Pellikoduku

The bride and groom are bathed with turmeric and oil and dressed in new clothes, each at their own home. These ceremonies are intimate and emotional, with close family and lots of laughter. Capture the turmeric application, the elders' blessings and portraits after the bride or groom is dressed.

Snathakam and Kashi Yatra

During snathakam, the groom wears a sacred thread. In the playful Kashi Yatra that follows, he pretends to leave for a life of study in Kashi, with an umbrella and walking stick, until the bride's brother persuades him to stay and marry. This is one of the most fun moments to photograph, so make sure the photographer has a clear view.

On the Wedding Day

Gauri Puja

The bride prays to Goddess Gauri while the groom's rituals happen separately. Capture her in quiet prayer, along with details of her outfit and jewellery.

Kanyadaanam

The bride's parents give her hand to the groom. A curtain often separates the couple at this stage, and the bride is usually carried in a bamboo basket by her maternal uncles. Watch for the parents' expressions.

Jeelakarra Bellam

At the muhurtham, the couple place a paste of cumin and jaggery on each other's heads as the curtain drops and they see each other. This is the most important photo of the ceremony and lasts only a moment. The photographer should be positioned and ready well before the auspicious time.

Mangalya Dharana

The groom ties the mangalsutra around the bride's neck. Close-up and wide shots both matter here, with the families visible in the background.

Talambralu

The couple shower each other with rice mixed with turmeric, saffron and pearls. It often turns into a friendly competition and is one of the most joyful moments to capture in bursts.

Saptapadi and Arundhati Nakshatram

The couple take seven steps together. Later, the groom shows the bride the Arundhati star, a symbol of a devoted marriage. Evening light and a wider frame suit this moment.

Appagintalu

The bride's family formally hand her over to the groom's family. This farewell is usually very emotional, and the photos often become some of the most meaningful in the album.

Tips for Couples

  • Share the muhurtham time and the priest's sequence of rituals with your photographer
  • Ask the priest whether the photographer can stand near the mandap during key rituals
  • Ask relatives not to crowd in front of the couple during jeelakarra bellam and talambralu
  • Plan family group photos for after the main rituals, not during them

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important photo in a Telugu wedding?

Most families consider jeelakarra bellam at the muhurtham and mangalya dharana to be the most important moments to capture.

How many photographers are needed for a Telugu wedding?

Because some rituals happen at the bride's and groom's homes at the same time, many families book two photographers, at least for the pellikuthuru and pellikoduku ceremonies.

Can the muhurtham be photographed at night?

Yes. Many Telugu weddings have late-night or early-morning muhurthams. The photographer should bring lighting suited to the mandap so the key moments are clear.
